Becoming #narcproof is a process.

WHEN YOU HAVE BEGUN TO FEEL YOUR HEART NEEDING PROTECTION FROM THE PEOPLE THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO LOVE YOU... YOU'RE ALREADY STARTING THAT PROCESS.

So what are typical narcissistic behaviors?

  • criticizing
  • embarrassing
  • manipulating
  • shaming
  • blaming
  • minimizing
  • discounting
  • dismissing
  • depriving
  • gaslighting

...and denying rights, needs, wants, thoughts, feelings AND equality to the people with whom they are in relationship.

Are you one of those people?

HOW DO NARCISSISTIC FOLKS MOVE THROUGH THE WORLD?

The typical "look at me, I'm the only one who matters, you should all love me and do as I say because I know best about everything..." attitude is only the beginning.

The Voice
A narcissist will often use their voice to manipulate. Their goal is to empower themselves and overpower the other person, so they will use verbal tactics: patronizing statements, arrogant attitudes, and intimidating or condescending tones.
coercive-control-6
Gaslighting
Telling you how you feel, or what you think, rather than listening to you... And, telling you you didn't say or do something that you absolutely did... this is to undermine your confidence and sanity, to make you second guess yourself, and ultimately to control you.
female-yelling
Blame Shifting
Absolutely denying they could ever do anything wrong and in the same sentence, placing the blame directly on you or someone/something else. Worse, they suggest someone "made" them do something that they're now refusing to take responsibility for.

Lies, lies, lies... yea-ah.
From the tiny white ones to the giant pathological ones, a narcissist will think nothing of passing off lies as the truth, and question you for questioning them until you don't know what's real or not anymore. They traffic in fabrication and exaggeration, deception, and ommission, whatever it takes to win.

Exhausting
They require all the energy of everyone around them - whether to prop them up as they play the victim, or to listen to them as they extoll their own amazing virtues and accomplishments ad nauseum. Covert narcissists can come across as needy and vulnerable so that you will give them all your attention.

The Silent Treatment
Are you left hanging after a conflict? Or did you question the veracity of something, and now they haven't talked to you for weeks...even when you're in the same room? Or do they look at you with "that look" that says all the horrible things they are thinking, and expresses their contempt for you?

But how do I protect myself?

It’s difficult to admit–to yourself and to others –that you are being manipulated by a narcissist, and, thus, emotionally abused.

Putting up with it often seems like a less embarrasing alternative to acknowledging that we're being treated poorly.

But there are strategies you can learn and use to keep yourself sane, and reduce their impact on your life.

FIRST - learn how to spot one.

Narcissists are not always overt and easy to spot. Sometimes they are quiet, and come across vulnerable "victims" who quietly suck the life. So become well-versed in the behaviors to watch out for.

SECOND - define clear boundaries.

Knowing what you will and will not accept in your life is a great start. Being clear about the way you wish to be treated, and developing the assertiveness to clearly, and kindly, communicate those lines - and the consequences for crossing/disregarding them is essential.

I know those are tough words to hear.

The abuse that pours from a narcisisst is insidious because it often starts as the love we are seeking. And they know it.

As they get more and more comfortable believing that you can't see through them, they will become more and more abusive. NOW is the time to see clearly and refuse to accept it any longer.

Recognize the many sneaky and obvious ways that you may being emotionally manipulated and abused by a narcissist. On my Save Your Sanity podcast and my YouTube channel, there’s so much for you. I hope you’ll listen, watch, recognize, and know that NO ONE has the right to abuse you.

I’m here to help you gain insights, skills, and strategies to help you say NO! to further emotional abuse. Please start today. You deserve to live without abuse!
